Often viewed as one of the first systems of medicine ever established, Ayurveda is a 5000-year-old Indian system of care that holistically addresses the mind, body and spirit. In Ayurveda, food is medicine. When a person eats with their unique body in mind, they can improve their health, live longer, and protect themselves from disease.

Ayurveda is a versatile system of healthcare because it can be tailored to suit any person’s unique needs. By following an ayurvedic lifestyle, one can help stay healthy, recover faster from illness, and hopefully set the stage for long life. It can also complement traditional medicine and become an integrative part of their healthcare support system.

An underlying principle of Ayurveda is that we are both energy and matter combined. We are made up of five elements: Space, Air, Fire, Water, Earth. These five elements are found in varying amounts in every person. This unique combination makes up our predominant body composition “Dosha”. There are 3 main body constitutions “Vata”, “Pitta”, and “Kapha”.

What are the elements for each Dosha?

Vata is made up of elements Space and Air; Pitta is made up of elements Fire and Water; Kapha is made up of Water and Earth.

Why is this important?

Staying in balance with your body constitution promotes healthy, long life. And when these are disturbed by lifestyle or environmental conditions, they go out of balance which results in disease.

We do we achieve that balance?

One can achieve this balance back through the Ayurvedic lifestyle and practices. These practices start with understanding who you are and then adjusting your lifestyle and food to best fit your unique needs.
